National Emergency Declared in Israel after massive fire gets out of control

Massive Wildfire Near Jerusalem Triggers National Emergency, Forces Evacuations and Highway Closure

Jerusalem, Israel: A massive wildfire erupted in the hills west of Jerusalem on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, rapidly spreading due to strong winds and dry conditions, prompting authorities to declare a national emergency. The blaze has forced the evacuation of at least six communities and led to the closure of key highways, including Route 1, the main artery connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The fires, which broke out near the town of Neve Shalom, approximately 15 miles west of Jerusalem, quickly escalated, blanketing the area in thick smoke and severely reducing visibility. This hazardous situation led to the immediate shutdown of several roads, including the crucial Highway 1, leaving drivers stranded and some abandoning their vehicles as flames approached.

Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a "time of national emergency," mobilizing all available forces, including around 120 firefighting teams supported by aircraft and helicopters, to combat the raging inferno. Israel has also appealed for international assistance, with aid expected from neighboring countries like Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, and Italy.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service reported treating at least seven people for mild smoke inhalation, with one individual in moderate condition. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of the fires worsening if the adverse weather conditions persist.

The current outbreak is particularly concerning as it occurs in the same general area as a significant fire that broke out just last week, raising questions about the region's vulnerability and fire preparedness. As emergency services work tirelessly to contain the blaze, residents across central Israel remain on high alert.

The timing of the wildfire is particularly sensitive, coinciding with Israel's Memorial Day, a day of national remembrance for fallen soldiers. The unfolding crisis has added an additional layer of emotional strain on the nation, with some commemorative events being cancelled or impacted
