In a road accident in a coastal city of the kingdom, a Saudi newspaper reports the death of a Saudi cleric, his wife, and their five children. During a heavy traffic accident near the coastal city of Al Qunfudah, a speeding truck collided with a car carrying seven victims. A grief-stricken neighbour and friend of Sheikh Ahmed Al Basissy, an imam of a mosque in Al Qundudah, said the truck crashed into their car as they were returning from Makkah after performing the Umrah.
The victims' neighbourhood was devastated by the news of the deadly crash.
Online condolences and shock were expressed by several Saudis regarding the departure of the Imam. The late clergyman's sermons were recorded by some of his mourners and posted on YouTube.
Abdul Latif Al-Sheikh, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Islamic Affairs, also expressed condolences. One victim, Ahmad, a ninth grader at a Quran memorisation school complex, died unexpectedly, causing deep sadness among staff and students. The institution's manager Darwish Al Magrabi described him as an example of morality and knowledge pursuit. He praised Sheikh Al Basissy's kindness and helpfulness, calling him a great cleric. The Imam and his family members were buried after the their funeral at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
