UN Secures Approval for Increased Aid Deliveries to Gaza
Geneva/Gaza: The United Nations announced on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, that it has received authorization for approximately 100 additional emergency aid trucks to enter the Gaza Strip. This development aims to enhance humanitarian assistance to the region, which has experienced limited access for essential supplies in recent weeks.
Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office (OCHA), confirmed the approval during a press briefing held in Geneva. He expressed optimism that a significant number of these trucks would successfully cross into Gaza.
This increased approval follows a period where only a small number of aid trucks had been able to enter Gaza. On Monday, May 19, only nine aid trucks were cleared for entry through the Kerem Shalom crossing. Of these, five trucks containing baby food and nutritional products were confirmed to have entered Gaza and permission for their collection was granted on Tuesday morning.
UN officials have consistently highlighted the need for consistent and large-scale access for humanitarian aid into Gaza. Organizations emphasize the critical levels of food, medicine, and fuel supplies within the area.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has indicated that the availability of food remains a significant concern, with implications for the well-being of the population. UN agencies and humanitarian partners continue to advocate for unimpeded access for aid to reach communities in need.
