Burger King Israel to Distribute Vouchers to Soldiers Following Non-Kosher Food Lawsuit
Tel Aviv, Israel: Burger King Israel has been ordered to distribute vouchers worth 480,000 shekels (approximately $125,900) to Israeli soldiers and reservists as part of a settlement agreement following a lawsuit filed in 2022.
The lawsuit was brought by customers who alleged they were misled into consuming non-kosher food at one of the chain's branches in Israel. According to the complaint, a specific Burger King location continued to display a kosher certification sign outside its premises for over a year after its kosher status had been revoked.
While Burger King Israel denied the claims of misleading customers, they admitted that the exterior sign in question was removed after the lawsuit was filed.
Judge Rachel Arkobi, who approved the settlement agreement, stated that "There is no dispute that the sign at the mall presented the branch as kosher, establishing a personal claim for the plaintiff."
As part of the settlement, Burger King Israel is required to issue 8,727 vouchers, each valued at 55 shekels ($14.40). These vouchers will be valid for one year and can be used at any of the chain's kosher-certified branches in Israel.
In addition to the distribution of vouchers to soldiers, the plaintiff in the case will receive 9,600 shekels (around $2,500) in compensation, along with further funds to cover his legal expenses.
This settlement brings an end to the legal dispute and results in a unique form of compensation, directing a significant amount of value towards Israeli military personnel through the Burger King voucher program. The case highlights the importance of accurate representation regarding food certifications and the potential legal ramifications of misleading consumers.
