The Economist recently reported a significant surge in the Muslim population in Japan, indicating that Islam is rapidly becoming the fastest-growing religion in the East Asian nation. Tanada Hirofumi, from Waseda University, unveiled data highlighting this remarkable trend, suggesting a substantial increase in the number of Muslims residing in Japan.
Over the past decade alone, the Muslim community in Japan has more than doubled in size. In 2010, records showed approximately 110,000 Muslim worshippers in the country. However, by the close of 2019, this figure had surged to 230,000, with an estimated 50,000 Japanese nationals among them who had converted to Islam.
To accommodate the growing Muslim population and facilitate their religious practices, Japan now hosts over 110 mosques, a development warmly welcomed by the global Muslim community, according to Muhammad Tahir Abbas Khan, a professor at APU and the head of the Beppu Muslim Association (BMA).
Several factors contribute to the rapid spread of Islam in Japan. Firstly, Islam's status as the world's fastest-growing religion naturally positions it as one of the fastest-growing faiths in every country it touches. Additionally, many Muslims in Japan have embraced the nation as their home, opting not to migrate to other Muslim-majority countries. This commitment to Japan as their primary residence, coupled with the inclination of their descendants to remain in Japan, has played a significant role in bolstering the Muslim population within the country.
