Hailstorm Causes Havoc in Asir Region, Saudi Arabia
A severe hailstorm struck the Al Namas governorate in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia on Sunday morning, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Social media circulated a video showcasing the aftermath, revealing widespread damage to vehicles and infrastructure.
The video footage captured the grim scene of cars bearing shattered windows and dented exteriors, victims of the onslaught of large hailstones. The southern Asir region bore the brunt of heavy to moderate rainfall, coupled with hail showers that descended upon the area, impacting various cities and governorates.
Cities like Abha and Khamis Mushayt, along with the governorates of Rijal Alma’, Al Namas, and Tanuma, experienced the wrath of the hailstorm. The deluge of hailstones led to the obstruction of main roads and streets, prompting swift action from local authorities.
Municipal workers and field teams were promptly deployed to clear the streets, ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and facilitating the restoration of normalcy. The adverse weather conditions extended beyond the Asir region, engulfing neighboring governorates and towns in rainfall and fog.
Areas such as Abha, Al Namas, Tanuma, and surrounding town centers were shrouded in fog, causing temperatures to plummet, particularly in elevated locations like Al-Souda Center. Flash floods ensued in some valleys and reefs, exacerbating the situation by inundating farms and low-lying areas.
The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) issued forecasts warning of torrential rains, high-speed winds, and hail showers in the capital city of Riyadh and other regions on Monday. Already, light to moderate rainfall has been reported in Riyadh, signaling the onset of inclement weather.
In response to the anticipated conditions, the Civil Defence has urged the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines provided by authorities during this period of rainy weather. As Saudi Arabia grapples with the aftermath of the hailstorm, concerted efforts are underway to mitigate the impact and ensure the safety of residents amidst the challenging weather conditions.
